North American Trade Corridor or Corridors?
By Steve Westfall
There have been several recent stories exposing a ‘NAFTA Super Highway’ or ‘Trade Corridor’ currently under construction in Texas despite many objections from well-informed Americans. Details about this project can be found at North America’s SuperCorridor Coalition, Inc. (NASCO). and it would appear there are far more corridor plans in store for the “North American Union” and its “Trade Corridors”–yes Corridors.
The North American Forum on Integration (NAFI) webstie states:
“The North American Forum on Integration (NAFI) is a non-profit organization devoted to developing North American dialogue and networks. Created in 2002, NAFI aims to build awareness on issues raised by North American integration and to focus the attention of decision-makers on the importance of the challenges at hand. In this perspective, NAFI intends to periodically bring together principal decision-makers from political, private, labor and academic sectors from Canada, the United States and Mexico.”
Through The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and its parallel agreements, NAFI claims:
“NAFTA has substantially liberalized trade in services and has opened government procurement markets, including procurement in services and construction markets. The agreement makes it illegal for the parties to discriminate between national and foreign producers in the trading of services, government markets and investment. Unlike the FTA between Canada and the United States, all services are included in the free trade agreement as long as they have not been explicitly exempted from the provisions of NAFTA. The agreement enumerates the exclusions indicated by the different levels of government in each country, following a scheduled timetable.”
NAFI’s website contains various bits of revealing information that includes a timeline of all agreements/treaties bewteen the Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. The most alarming area of the website is the section on trade corridors:
“Following the implementation of NAFTA, coalitions of interest have been formed in order to promote specific transport channels, to develop the infrastructures of these channels and to propose jurisdictional amendments to facilitate the crossing of borders. These coalitions include businesses, government agencies, civil organizations, metropolitan areas, rural communities and also individuals, wishing to strengthen the commercial hubs of their regions.
The North American trade corridors are bi- or tri-national channels for which various cross-border interests have grouped together in order to develop or consolidate the infrastructures. The North American corridors are considered multimodal in the sense that they bring into play different modes of transport in succession.
The infrastructures may include roads, highways, transit routes, airports, pipelines, railways and train stations, river canal systems and port facilities, telecommunications networks and teleports.”
NAFI describes in detail nort one but four specific corridors; The Pacific Corridor, The Central Western Corridor, The Central Eastern Corridor (this includes the trans-texas and I-69 sections), and The Atlantic Corridor. Each corridor has its very own subset of connector roads in additon to “regional networks of business people, civil organizations and government agencies.” all working together to “foster growth” on an international level.
While some may view ‘Trade Corridors’ as a way for the Bush administration to allow cheap trucking for business, easier distribution of Asian imports, or an just excuse to keep borders open–it is clearly playing a part in the grand scheme that is a “North American Union” paralleling that of the European Union. It is also eye-opening slap-in-the-face evidence of public servants taking matters into thier own hands without the authorization of We the People who allow them to run the government. These so called elected ‘officials’ are collaborating with corporations and NGO lobbyists to form a self-interested-corporate-fascist-police-state determined to undermine American sovereignty at all levels and at any cost in the name of One World Government.
Where are the People’s voices? Who decided it was in America’s best interest to move forward with this project? Why didn’t Bill Clinton or George Bush tell us about the “Trade Corridors” that would significantly change American lives and land when they advocated FTA, NAFTA, and CAFTA? Who exactly does this benefit and why? Pondering these questions, it does not seem the American people will reap rewards from a borderless union where the dollar is further devalued and workers paid less or are otherwise unemployed.
Because of these “Corridors” there are many angry people in Texas losing thier private property to unconstitutional eminent domain land grabs, made ‘legal’ by the Supreme Court Kelo vs. New London decision. It is an outrage that Americans lie down like forlorn sheep, while the government wolf crushes thier necks. You should be mad too–for even if this does not directly affect you now–I assure you it soon will–if not now or this issue it will be another that is only on the horizon.
